The Polish-Lithuanian Union was for 300 years the greatest power in Eastern Europe, one of the longest-lasting political unions in European history. It was a consensual, decentralized, multinational, and religiously plural state, founded by peaceful negotiation.
Understanding the legacy of the union is essential in understanding the modern history of Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus.
